After the fire, access was difficult, nearly impossible. The roads were blocked by downed trees and logs, and we had to navigate a steeplechase of large trees. Thanks to the Herculean efforts by Auggie Gleason, Opal Creek staff and with support from the US Forest Service, Trailkeepers of Oregon, Northwest Youth Corps, I was able to access the area over the last five years to set up wildlife cameras.
The cameras captured life in the burn, including Bobcat, Cougar, Black Bear, Rabbit, Wood rat, Field mice, Skunk, Deer, Mink (rare), Quail, Grouse, Sierra Nevada Red Fox (very, very rare), Pine Marten, River Otter, Raven, Flicker - and of course chipmunks, squirrels, common Jays, Robins and other birds.
