We have had some amazing weather here in Las Vegas this June and to take advantage of a day with temperature highs in the mid 80's I decided to get a good hike in at Red Rock Canyon national Conservation Area before it gets too hot for the summer season. The Turtlehead Peak Hike, which starts at the Sandstone Quarry Trailhead along with a few other hikes, is known as being one of the more challenging trails in the park. The hike is less than five miles round trip but challenging part is the steep elevation gain and loss. Nearly 2,000 ft over just a little more than two miles.
I did check the weather before setting out on the hike and was expecting storms, which I know is not safe for climbing mountain peaks but I wanted to go for it anyway. There were a few moments before reaching the saddle that I had thought about turning back but once I reached the saddle and saw the clear skies I knew I made the right decision to keep on hiking. Plus I enjoyed the experience of sitting thru a storm in the desert mountains, not something you get to do every day. I waited out the storm with a father and daughter visiting the area from Wisconsin, apparently every trip they've made to the dry southwest they have a story of getting stormed on, maybe they brought the rain..
Thank you for watching! I'll try to get back out on the trails on my next days off from work so I can make some more videos!
