In 1847, Elias Turner, enslaved in South Carolina, was made to attend Sunday service in the plantation chapel. By evening, his master’s coat was found draped neatly across the altar, but the man himself was missing. Elias, too, had vanished. Travelers later swore they saw two figures walking the backroads together — one carrying a lantern, the other bare-shouldered beneath the moonlight.
