Every October, Bear Grass, North Carolina, a tiny town of just 89 people in Martin County, hosts the Chicken Mull Festival. Nearly 4,000 visitors come to try chicken mull, a peppery stew made with parboiled chicken, broth, crushed crackers, and eggs. Many local community members cook it in big pots the night before, using boat paddles to stir.
On festival day, people line up downtown for hot bowls of chicken mull, live bluegrass music, a classic car cruise-in, a petting zoo, a kids’ zone, and plenty of vendor tents selling everything from food to handmade crafts. The festival is more than just a meal. It celebrates Bear Grass’s food traditions and invites newcomers to enjoy a dish that is both spicy and comforting. We went to the 12th annual festival on October 25, 2025, and had a great time!
