In this video, we have the pleasure of being joined by the internationally renowned artist Yoskay Yamamoto. He takes us on a childhood car ride in the moonlight and gives us a sneak peek into his exhibition “Cry Cry Shine Shine.”
If you are passionate about painting, design, or pop culture, this video is a must-watch! During our conversation, Yoskay delves into his role as a studio artist, sharing insights into his work, encompassing everything from painting historical myths and folktales to designing iconic pop characters inspired by his lifelong “Moon” mythology. He also discusses his artistic philosophy and how his love for history and pop culture inspires him.
Yoskay Yamamoto was born and raised in Toba, Japan, and moved to the United States. He recalls his early creative endeavors, “I used to construct things out of LEGO® blocks.” Initially, he explored graphic design while also experimenting with illustration possibilities. His distinctive artistic style often incorporates music and elements of West Coast culture. I had the privilege of visiting Yoskay Yamamoto at his art studio, where we shared stories about music, art, and sources of inspiration.
The video’s runtime is a succinct three minutes and thirty-three seconds, promising a more comprehensive art film to come. Yoskay Yamamoto sincerely thanks Erik Nakamura of Giant Robot and his Mom for generously providing his Los Angeles studio for a year. With this newfound creative space, Yoskay eagerly embarks on an intense creative journey, crafting a contemporary art collection exhibited at Giant Robot Gallery in Los Angeles.
Yoskay shares a childhood memory: “When I was a boy, I thought everyone had their moon.” The moon, prominently featured in Yoskay’s art, holds significant meaning in connection to his name. Its circular shape conveys the importance of ancient symbolism and whimsical expression.
In Yoskay’s collections, we see a unique blend of iconic pop characters from Japanese folklore and Western urban pop culture.
