Episodio 3 - Música Cañari: Haway, Mamadanza e Inti Raymi

Este tercer episodio de los documentales demuestra las actividades musicales asociados con Inti Raymi, con atención especial dado a los estilos musicales y las historias de haway y la mamadanza. Además, explica como las comunidades alrededor de Cañar están recreando Inti Raymi con elementos autóctonos de la cultura Cañari mientras extraen los símbolos opresivos de la época de la hacienda.

This third episode of the documentaries demonstrates the musical activities associated with Inti Raymi, with special attention given to the musical styles and histories of haway and mamadanza. In addition, it explains how the communities around Cañar are recreating Inti Raymi using indigenous elements from Cañari culture while disentangling oppressive symbols from the hacienda system.

Allison Adrian, la directora del documental, es una etnomusicóloga de los EEUU. Ella trabajaba por seis meses en 2016 en Cañar, Ecuador, realizando entrevistas en profundidad a más que 30 músicos y documentando fiestas, o raymis, Cañaris. Su enfoque principal era las celebraciones de Pawkar Raymi y Inti Raymi, aunque también investigaba tradiciones musicales autóctonas como sulaway, mamadanza, cuchunchi, y música popular. Su investigación se hizo posible por un convenio con Instituto Quilloac UECIB, el apoyo del Fulbright Association, Museo Pumapungo, St. Catherine University, y la generosidad de los entrevistados.

Las sabidurías dentro del documentales son de las comunas Cañaris, y la propiedad intelectual se queda con ellas. Los resultados de la investigación se quedarán en el Instituto Quilloac en Cañar, Ecuador, en AILLA - el archivo de las lenguas indígenas de Latino America - en la Universidad de Texas, Austin, y, en el Archivo de la Cultura Cañar en el Centro de Memoria Padre Angél María Iglesias, las mismas que servirán como fuentes primarias de consulta a la población estudiantil y las comunas Cañaris y a investigadores.

Allison Adrian, the director of the documentary, is an ethnomusicologist from the U.S. She worked in Cañar, Ecuador for six months in 2016, conducting in-depth interviews with more than 30 musicians and documenting fiestas, or raymis Cañaris. Her primary focus was on the festivals of Pawkar Raymi and Inti Raymi, although she also researched private musical celebrations like sulaway (a song sung to bless a house after its construction), mamadanza (a dance performed near Corpus Christi), cuchunchi (traditional wedding music/dance), and popular musical styles.

Her research was made possible by an agreement with Instituto Quilloac UECIB, the support of the Fulbright Association, Museo Pumapungo, St. Catherine University, and the generosity of those she interviewed.

The wisdom within the documentaries belongs to the Cañari community and the intellectual property remains with them. The results of the research are held at Instituto Quilloac in Cañar, in AILLA - Archive of Indigenous Languages of Latin America - at University of Texas, Austin, and in the archive of Cañari Culture at the Padre Angél María Iglesias Memory Center. These resources serve
as sources of consultation to the student population and community in Cañar and to researchers.
