Part of Nina's work consists of being the link between the Montessori community and national authorities and other stakeholders in education, and she works to make Montessori's voice heard in society and within education. She has lead the work of curriculum development and recognition in Norway, in close collaboration with the Montessori community and teacher trainers.
The Montessori approach is closely aligned with the EU Key Competences framework and offers answers to many challenges of traditional education. Yet, Montessori programs are rarely recognized by governments and often forced to comply with rigid, unsuitable standards.
A government-approved Montessori curriculum can bridge this gap. It helps articulate the connection between EU Key Competences and Montessori pedagogy, provides stability and quality, and serves as a uniting framework for teachers — as well as a pathway to wider recognition.
This presentation explores Norway’s government-approved Montessori curriculum (6–12) — one of the few worldwide. We will look at its advantages and disadvantages, the challenges faced, and lessons learned from aligning Cosmic Education, EU competences, and national requirements.
This Keynote was presented at the Elementary Teachers in Action Conference on 29 November 2025 and was funded by the European Union. This video is part of Erasmus+ project: Citizen of the World: guidelines on key competencies building in Montessori Elementary classroom.
