Like many honkyoku, San'ya exists in multiple versions. The piece is also known by different titles, such as “Mountain Valley” (also pronounced san'ya). The name Three Valleys may refer to a semi-mythical dwelling of enlightened beings or symbolize the Three Jewels of Buddhism: the Buddha, the Dharma (teachings), and the Sangha (community). This particular rendition of Three Valleys is unique on this recording, as it is not part of the Chikuho lineage but comes from the Watazumi lineage.
