The Columbia NIEHS P30 Center Virtual Seminar Series Presents:
Perry Hystad, PhD – Associate Professor in the School of Biological and Population Health Sciences at the College of Public Health and Human Sciences, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR

Abstract: Spatial methods are common in environment epidemiology, but novel data, models and methods are not utilized to their full potential. Smartphones, new sensors and big data offer new opportunity for improving personal exposure assessments at scales needed for environmental epidemiology. In this presentation Dr. Hystad will highlight new opportunities and provide examples of novel approaches used in his research. For example, leveraging existing individual time-activity data from Google Location History to estimate long-term personal environment exposures; integrating image-based deep learning models to assess urban green space quality and impacts on mental health; and applying connected vehicle data to examine congestion impacts on adverse birth outcomes.
