Fellow Ghanaians, this week marked seven years since investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale was brutally assassinated on January 16, 2019, shot three times by unknown gunmen on a motorbike near his home in Madina, Accra while returning from work, a killing that shocked not only our country but press freedom advocates across Africa and the world.
Ahmed Suale was a key member of the Tiger Eye Private Investigations team led by Anas Aremeyaw Anas, and he played a central role in the blockbuster Number 12 exposé that uncovered widespread corruption and match-fixing in Ghanaian and African football, leading to the dissolution of the Ghana Football Association and a lifetime ban for former GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi.
Even before his death, Suale had been targeted because of his work. His identity was publicly revealed on national television by then Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, who called for reprisals against him after the documentary aired, an act that raised serious concerns about political interference and intimidation of journalists.
In the days and years that followed the killing, the police made several arrests early on but released suspects due to lack of evidence, and despite multiple official assurances that the perpetrators would be found and brought to justice, progress has been painfully slow or nonexistent.
