How do we enjoy games again? How do we restart that passion?
Many of us still love video games - in theory. We still watch trailers, follow gaming news, watch video essays, and keep a growing backlog. But when it’s time to actually sit down and play, it’s like the magic has faded. Some say they’ve ‘grown out of games,’ others blame short attention spans, burnout, or gaming itself, claiming that games just aren’t as good anymore. And because of all of that - it’s just hard to feel immersed. I have definitely felt that too. There have been times where I really wanted to play, but couldn’t make myself care. So I started looking for ways to change that.
And I’ve gathered 8 tips to get myself and you back into gaming.
Move to the Couch: This is for the folks who own a laptop. The idea is to treat it like a “gaming console” by bringing it into the living room. Just hook it up to the TV with an HDMI cable, plug in a controller, and find some games with controller support. And if you don’t fancy a controller, try out one of these - lounge on that couch. If you treat your laptop like a gaming console, you might have a better gaming time because you solidify your gaming session a little bit more. We’ve all heard about the PC master race and whatnot, but for those of us who have trouble keeping focus while gaming, PCs can be a detriment. I mean, they're awesome for all the versatility they bring, but likewise they also come with a bunch of distractions that a console just doesn’t have to the same degree. Consoles have basically one purpose: Gaming. Sure it can surf the web and go on YouTube and all that but it’s just not as accessible as it is on a PC - you’re a little less likely to alt-tab out of a game because you got a Discord message, y’know?
Play With Headphones: This is probably one of the easiest, but also one of the most powerful tips on this list. Get a good headset, preferably with noise cancelling because you wanna shield off all other noise that might be happening around you. You can go with earbuds or you go with headphones. I prefer headphones myself, because I think the physical feeling of wearing them adds to the feeling of being locked in.
