Police have confiscated excavators and other heavy machinery in
Bapong, North West, as part of intensified efforts to combat illegal
mining. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and National Police
Commissioner Fannie Masemola met with the Bapo Ba Mogale Tribal
Council to discuss strategies to curb illicit mining activities.
Cachalia underlined the urgent need to amend legislation to classify
illegal mining as a criminal offence, citing gaps in existing laws.
