The iconic chicken and mushroom "Garage Pie" (petrol station pie). Many South Africans have indulged in this iconic meal, be it very early in the morning after a night out with friends or as a quick meal on the go. This recipe takes the humble chicken and mushroom pie to something very special!
This recipe makes enough filling for about 12–15 rather large pies. (It can easily be halved.)
You can make them in advance and freeze them for a few weeks. Just eggwash them and bake them (from frozen) for about 25-30 minutes or until they are golden and flaky.
Recipe
∙ 2 Chickens
∙ 2 Onions
∙ 1½ tablespoons Garlic flakes
∙ 500 grams White button mushrooms
∙ ½ tablespoon dried thyme
∙ Salt & pepper
∙ ½ teaspoon white pepper
∙ ½ cup flour
∙ ½ cup butter
∙ ½ chicken stock cube
∙ 1¼ cup water
∙ 2 cups Greek yoghurt
∙ 1 cup frozen vegetables
∙ 2 eggs for eggwash
For the bottom of the pie, we used store-bought SHORTCRUST pastry
For the top of the pi,e we used store-bough PUFF pastry
