With extreme temperatures of up to 48 degrees Celsius expected, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world has commenced in Saudi Arabia.
The Hajj occurs two months and 10 days after Ramadan ends, during the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah. The pilgrimage is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, and all Muslims are required to make the five-day Hajj at least once in their lives if they are able to do it financially and physically.
This year, Saudi Arabia is expected to experience extreme heat over the five-day pilgrimage, with temperatures reaching 48 degrees Celsius in Mecca with more than 1.5million pilgrims converging on vast tent camps in the deserts. Numbers are also expected to grow with Saudi authorities anticipating just over 2 million pilgrims this year. Six people have already been reported to have passed away from heatstroke, with authorities urging attendees to carry umbrellas and stay hydrated amid the harsh conditions.
