Today, we are going to walk from Gardens by the Bay MRT Station to Marina Barrage during the NDP 2024 Preview. Gardens by the Bay MRT Station, situated on Singapore's Downtown and Thomson-East Coast Lines, opened in 2012. Nearby, Marina Barrage, completed in 2008 at the mouth of Marina Channel, serves three main purposes: water supply, flood control, and recreation. It is Singapore's first city reservoir and a popular spot for picnics, water sports, and city skyline views. The barrage also helps manage flooding in low-lying areas. Visitors can walk or bike from Gardens by the Bay to Marina Barrage along a scenic waterfront route.

Marina Barrage is a key infrastructure project in Singapore. Built across Marina Channel, it forms Marina Reservoir, the city's first and Singapore's fifteenth reservoir. Conceived in the 1980s to boost water supply, it transforms a saltwater area into freshwater, expanding the water catchment area by 10,000 hectares, or one-sixth of Singapore's land. For flood control, the barrage can open crest gates or use pumps to release excess water into the sea, preventing city floods.

The barrage also serves as a recreational hub, offering activities like kayaking, dragon boating, and kite flying. Its Green Roof provides panoramic city views, making it a popular spot for picnics. Marina Barrage exemplifies Singapore's innovative urban planning, blending functionality with recreational spaces to enhance life for residents and visitors.
