Chicxulub Asteroid Impact
The asteroid impact, which occurred 66 million years ago, struck near what is now the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico, creating the Chicxulub Crater. The asteroid, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) in diameter, released an immense amount of energy, equivalent to billions of atomic bombs. It caused widespread fires, tsunamis, and threw massive amounts of debris into the atmosphere, blocking sunlight and leading to a global "nuclear winter". This drastic climate change, with plummeting temperatures and lack of sunlight, caused the extinction of approximately 75% of all species, including the non-avian dinosaurs. The aftermath paved the way for the rise of mammals and eventually the evolution of humans.
