Protest, Not Celebration, Rings In New Year In

Instead of the usual street celebrations on New Year’s Eve, tens of thousands of protesters, led by university students, gathered overnight in Belgrade and other Serbian cities to demand political reforms and justice in the Balkan country.

The protests were sparked by the tragic collapse of a concrete canopy at the central train station in the northern town of Novi Sad on November 1, which claimed 15 lives. The disaster has been linked to corruption and poor construction standards under Serbia's populist leadership, triggering widespread outrage and calls for accountability.

Students from universities across Belgrade organized the demonstrations under the slogan, “There is No New Year — You Still Owe Us for the Old One,” highlighting their frustration with the government. Protesters, chanting “We Want Justice,” observed a moment of silence at 11:52 p.m. to honor the victims of the Novi Sad tragedy. Many carried banners displaying a red handprint, a powerful symbol of the anti-government movement accusing the authorities of having "blood on their hands."
