Situated on the Warta River and home to around 200,000 residents, Częstochowa is known worldwide for Jasna Góra – a place that has drawn millions of pilgrims for centuries. Here you will find the miraculous icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa, also called the Black Madonna, surrounded by reverence and legend.

In our film, we’ll take you on a walk through the city’s most beautiful sites – starting with the Gothic Church of St. James the Apostle, one of the oldest in Częstochowa, admired for its richly decorated interior and history dating back to the Middle Ages. Next, we’ll visit Władysław Biegański Square – the heart of the city, featuring the impressive City Hall building and serving as a popular meeting place for locals.

We’ll stroll along the Avenue of the Blessed Virgin Mary – the city’s main street, lined with historic tenement houses, shops, and cafés, leading directly to Jasna Góra. There we’ll uncover the history of the Pauline monastery, from its founding in the 14th century, through Gothic expansion, its heroic defense against the Swedes in 1655, and its role in modern-day pilgrimages. We’ll show you the Jasna Góra Basilica, the Chapel of the Miraculous Icon, the massive defensive walls, the Jasna Góra Tower with panoramic views of the city, the Treasury, and the Library filled with rare old prints.

You’ll also hear the legend behind the two distinctive scratches on the face of the Black Madonna, learn about the Jasna Góra Vows of King John II Casimir, and their renewal by Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński.

Finally, we’ll visit the Municipal Art Gallery to see a unique exhibition of drawings by Edward Lutczyn.
