The Cimmerians were a nomadic people of the Eurasian steppe who entered the written record during the 8th and 7th centuries BCE. Living north of the Black Sea, their world was shaped by wide grasslands, seasonal movement, and life on horseback. When pressure from the rising Scythians pushed them southward, the Cimmerians moved into the lands of the ancient Near East.
Their arrival brought sudden disruption. Moving through Anatolia, they raided established kingdoms such as Phrygia, fought against Urartu, and even challenged the power of Assyria. Ancient sources describe them as skilled horsemen and fast-moving raiders, appearing quickly and disappearing just as suddenly. For settled societies, the Cimmerians became a symbol of uncertainty during an already changing age.
Despite their dramatic impact, much about the Cimmerians remains unclear. Their language, customs, and internal structure are largely unknown, preserved only through the records of those they encountered. Over time, they were absorbed, displaced, or replaced as new powers rose across the steppe and the Near East.
In this episode, we explore the calm timeline of the Cimmerians - their origins, migrations, conflicts, and gradual disappearance from history - told slowly and clearly for quiet nighttime listening.
