BOB DOWNE (the comic creation of Mark Trevorrow) spent the 90s based in London. The ultimate British showbiz compliment is a spot on the Royal Variety Performance - and Bob made it in November 1995. Sunday 20 November was an electric night at the Dominion Theatre, London: the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and 2,000 audience members were the only people NOT watching Diana's bombshell PANORAMA interview on BBC1 that evening - when the Princess of Wales went nuclear, speaking freely about her depression and bulimia, her children, the media, the future of the monarchy - and her affair with James Hewitt. It was a surreal atmosphere back at the Dominion, where Bob shared the bill with Cliff Richard, Olivia Newton-John and Elaine Paige, as he performed with 12 dancers in a stunning production number, singing (appropriately enough!) I WILL SURVIVE.
