Over the years there have been a few times when athletes have run on their own in championship qualifying rounds for various reasons, the US women’s 4x100m team in 2016 and Isaac Makwala in 2017 being two such examples.
One of the first times it happened was at the 2002 European Championships in Munich when Ireland’s Paul Brizzel was impeded by a TV camera during the 200m heats. After protesting he was made to run a solo time trial in order to try and qualify for the next round.
This video details what happened with analysis provided by Michael Johnson and Roger Black.
