History & Market Naming

The “Yaris Sedan” is essentially the sedan version of the Yaris hatchback / supermini line. In different markets it uses different model names:

Yaris Ativ in places like Thailand.

Vios in many Southeast Asian markets.

Belta in Japan (older gen)

Sold simply as “Yaris Sedan” or “Yaris” in Latin America, Middle East, etc.


The first generations had simpler designs, fewer features, and smaller engine options; over time, safety, technology, and drivetrains have improved.


Generations / Platforms

XP150 / NSP152 generation: Used in markets such as Southeast Asia. The Yaris Ativ / Yaris Sedan in these areas used this platform.

XP210 (Hatchback) / AC100 (Sedan / DNGA-based newer sedan): The newer sedans introduced more recently (e.g. 2022 onward) have shifted to newer architectures. The sedan versions in many regions are built on the DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) platform.

For hatchback Yaris (global), since 2019/2020, the TNGA GA-B platform is used for many markets.


Engines / Powertrains

Globally, there is quite a spread depending on region, market demand, emissions regulations, costs etc.:

Smaller petrol engines (1.0 L, 1.2 L) are common, especially in developing / emerging markets, for cost / fuel economy reasons.

1.5 L petrol engines are also widely used especially in regions needing more power / for main market trims.

Transmission options vary: manual, CVT (or simulated multi-speed automatics), etc.

Hybrid versions are increasing globally, particularly for hatchback variants; advanced versions include new hybrid systems and more efficient engines.


Safety & Features

Newer models include advanced safety technologies, e.g. Toyota Safety Sense in higher trims.

Basic configuration in some markets may still have fewer airbags/options. Safety ratings globally vary depending on what safety equipment is standard in a given country.

Other features: infotainment screens, rear-parking cameras, driver aids, improved interiors are more common in recent generations.


Global Trends & Availability

The sedan (Yaris Sedan / Ativ / Vios) remains popular in many Asia, Latin America, Middle East markets, where smaller sedans are often more in demand than in many Western / European markets.

In some countries (e.g. India) the Yaris sedan has been discontinued due to weak sales.

Brazil had local production of the sedan; recent updates indicate Brazil ceased production of the Yaris sedan at end of 2024.
