In todays video we explore the abandoned Talgarth Mental Asylum or Mid Wales Hospital as it is often referred.
The hospital building was completed in 1900 and opened its doors in 1903 as the Brecon and Radnor Joint Asylum. The 12 wards could accommodate 352 patients and it was initially used as a place to 'house' people with mental illness away from the community, with limited treatment available.
Like most asylums of its time it started off relatively small and additional wings were eventually built to accommodate more patients.
Several controversial treatment procedures were carried out at the site - including electroshock therapy and lobotomies. Some rooms were completely padded, including floor and ceiling, for the most troubled of patients and strong suits were also available for patients who were prone to ripping their clothes off or pulling them apart.
During the second world war the hospital was used as a military hospital for wounded service personnel including those suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.
After the war treatments for patients included electroconvulsive therapy, also known as ECT.
According to mental health charity Mind, ECT is a treatment that involves sending an electric current through your brain, causing a brief surge of electrical activity within your brain, also known as a seizure. The aim of the treatment is to relieve the symptoms of some mental health problems.
The Talgarth asylum operated for 99 years until the hospital was vacated in 1997 and became abandoned until it sold in 1999 for £355,000 and still remains abandoned to this day.
This is one of the largest abandoned places I have ever explored and was one of my favourite, Even though its totally battered and destroyed for the most part, It still has a lot of character and makes for an exciting explore.
