L’opera di Dineo Seshee Bopape (Polokwane, Sudafrica, 1981; vive e lavora a Johannesburg) si contraddistingue per l’uso di materiali organici e fortemente simbolici che rimandano ai concetti di memoria, identità e appartenenza. La terra è uno degli elementi più riconoscibili del suo linguaggio, che mescolato e lavorato con altre sostanze come carbone, cenere, argilla, dà vita a installazioni ambientali. Partendo dal proprio vissuto legato al suo paese d’origine, il Sudafrica, Seshee Bopape tesse narrazioni che indagano archetipi e mitologie in cui la figura femminile assume un ruolo centrale. Coniugando l’estetica digitale con quella analogica, il suo lavoro incorpora media diversi – come la scultura, il disegno, il video e il suono – in un approccio poetico che trova le sue origini nella materia.

La mostra in Pirelli HangarBicocca, la prima personale dell’artista in un’istituzione italiana, presenta un ampio corpus di lavori e nuove produzioni di Seshee Bopape ponendo il visitatore all’interno di una ricca costellazione di rimandi storici e contesti geografici differenti. Il progetto esplora temi e soggetti al centro della pratica dell’artista che spaziano dalle relazioni tra rito, spiritualità e natura, a riflessioni sulle pratiche di guarigione tradizionali e forme di resistenza politica.

The work of Dineo Seshee Bopape (b. Polokwane, South Africa, 1981; lives and works in Johannesburg) is characterized by the use of organic and highly symbolic materials that allude to the concepts of memory, identity, and belonging. Soil is one of the most recognizable materials in her practice, and it is often mixed with other substances such as coal, ash, and clay to create environmental installations. Taking as a starting point her own experience in her homeland, South Africa, Seshee Bopape weaves narratives that investigate archetypes and myths in which the female figure plays a central role. Combining digital and analogical aesthetics, her work incorporates different media, like sculpture, drawing, video and sound, through a poetic approach that has its origins in matter.

The solo exhibition of Dineo Seshee Bopape, her first in an Italian institution, brings together a wide range of works as well as new productions. Visitors are drawn into a vast array of historical references and different geographical and geological contexts, giving them the chance to explore her practice, which reflects on the relationships between self, memory, socio-politics, history, sovereignty, form, nature and spirit.
