Kidney disease is a growing health concern in Australia, with many people unaware that they are affected.
According to Westmead Institute for Medical Research Natasha Rogers, kidney disease is currently at an epidemic level, with some individuals losing up to 90 per cent of their kidney function before symptoms even appear.
"Obviously, medical conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure contribute to kidney disease, and there are other conditions that can be hereditary, so passed down through families that predispose you to kidney disease. I think the combination of a lot of that can lead to kidney disease," Ms Rogers told Sky News Australia.
Additionally, lifestyle and diet play a significant role in the development of kidney disease, with conditions such as heart disease and lung problems also contributing to the risk.
