Water Lettuce Care: How To Grow, Propagate, And Maintain It Successfully!

It's great to see Water Lettuce becoming more popular in the aquarium hobby. This beautiful floating plant doesn’t just look great—it plays a huge role in improving water quality and supporting the overall health of your tank. In this video, I share my complete care guide for Water Lettuce, breaking down how to grow it successfully, what conditions it thrives in, and why it’s so beneficial for both fish and shrimp tanks.

Water Lettuce features large, leafy rosettes and long, trailing roots that create a striking jungle-like appearance. But beyond aesthetics, it’s a powerhouse when it comes to natural water purification. Research shows that it can absorb ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and even heavy metals, helping to stabilize water parameters and reduce the burden on your filtration system. It’s especially helpful in new tanks where nitrogen spikes are common.

Despite what many sources say, Water Lettuce is much more adaptable than people think. It can thrive in a wide range of pH levels—from as low as 6.4 to above 8.0—and can handle temperatures cooler than often reported, even as low as 64°F (18°C). It’s even considered invasive in countries with freezing winters, showing how hardy it truly is.

This plant grows fast and propagates easily, so you only need a few to quickly fill the surface of your aquarium. However, due to its large root systems, it’s best suited to tanks around 29 gallons or larger, though it can be managed in smaller setups with regular trimming.

Lighting and fertilization are simple—just basic aquarium lighting and a good fish load to provide natural nutrients are usually enough.
