What to do in Puerto Rico - Island Adventure with the Family

Over Christmas (December), we ditched Wisconsin for the warm tropical temps in Puerto Rico! An easy destination to travel to (no passports required), we spent 6 days on the island, exploring all that the North and East coast had to offer!

We wanted to visit the Caribbean during winter, to ensure we had some warm weather, but wanted more than a beach vacation. Puerto Rico checked every box on our list! With endless opportunities for adventure, this is the place to go!

The first day we went hiking in El Yunque Rainforest with a guided hike we booked on ‪@GetYourGuide‬ . The local company, Spotin' Tours, was really amazing. The hike was extremely crowded but with patience and the right mindset, we had so much fun! Be sure to explore your options for entering the rainforest. There are lots of waterfalls to see!

After hiking we cleaned up and went to JungleQui for a zipline tour. We have ziplined in many different places and this was fun. This place is not to be confused with The Beast (more inland), but this zip tour gave us some thrills and was really close to home.

The boys went off-shore (11 miles) fishing with a fishing charter. They caught black fin tuna, king mackerel, and more. We were able to keep some of the fish and cooked it up for dinner one night. Fresh sashimi -- now that's what I'm talking about! The boat and all the gear was the best I’ve had on a charter. We mostly targeted pelagics with flutter jigs. We wanted hands on, active fishing, and that’s what we did. Marcos had also caught live bait before we arrived that morning, which caught us our biggest fish, a king mackerel over 40 pounds.

The girls visited Luquillo Beach. It was really calm this week and we were able to easily play in the water without concern for undertow. Playa Azul had a red flag so I'm glad we could find a beach they could swim at!

Be sure to do a snorkel tour while in Puerto Rico! This was booked though Trip Advisor with Snorkel Puerto Rico. The kids had a blast and unlimited pina coladas didn't hurt either! Icacos Island was stunning, covered in white sand and blue water that you can see through. The sun was out and we had an amazing time!

We found the only boat to tour the Bioluminescent Bay in Fajardo. All of the other bookings were kayaks. The boat allowed us to relax and learn some interesting facts along the way. Trust me when I say it's DARK and you will be kayaking in the DARK. The conditions were perfect for our trip to the bay. We saw the glowing organisms very well. We felt as if we were in Avatar! This was the highlight of our trip!
