The Victory Tour was a concert tour of the United States and Canada by The Jacksons between July and December 1984. It was the only tour with all six Jackson brothers, even though Jackie was injured for most of it. The group performed 55 concerts to an audience of approximately 2 million. Most came to see Michael, whose album Thriller had been dominating the popular music world at the time. Many consider it to be his Thriller tour, with most of the songs on the set list coming from his Off the Wall and Thriller albums. The tour reportedly grossed approximately $75 million ($181 million in 2018 dollars and set a new record for the highest-grossing tour. It showcased Michael's single decorated glove, black sequined jacket and moonwalk.

As the opening song and fourth single of Thriller, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' picks up where Off the Wall left off and begins the new phenomenon of Thriller. According to Epic Records notes, the song was written in part by Michael for his sister LaToya as a response to negative reports about her relationship with her sisters, but Michael recorded it himself. Released on its own on May 8, 1983, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' went #1 in Canada and the Netherlands and cracked in the Top 40 in 13 regions. It charted again in Denmark, Italy and Switzerland in 2008 following the release of its successful remix for Thriller 25, and at #25 in America following Jackson's death on June 25, 2009.

The song was first performed by Jackson as both a member of The Jacksons as well as a solo artist during world concert tours. It was performed by Jackson during the Jacksons final world concert series, including the Victory Tour in 1984, for which it was the tour's opening song. Similar to the Victory Tour, "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" was the Bad World Tour opening song on both tour legs. The concert series lasted from 1987 to 1989. A version was released on the 2012 DVD Live at Wembley July 16, 1988. "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" was also performed during Jackson's Dangerous World Tour from June 1992 to November 1993. The next, and what would be the last performance of the song, was during Jackson's world concert tour, HIStory World Tour, from 1996 to 1997. Since March 2009, Jackson was preparing to perform "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" during his This Is It concert series from 2009 to 2010. During rehearsals for the This Is It concerts, Jackson's performance of "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" contained an a cappella snippet of "Speechless", from Jackson's studio album Invincible (2001). Following Jackson's death in June of the same year, video footage of Jackson rehearsing the song was used as the opening song in the 2009 concert documentary, Michael Jackson's This Is It.

The iconic outro of the song, repeating the Cameroonian phrase Mama Se, Mama Sa, Ma Makusa has never been outright defined. A lawsuit decided that Jackson (and Rihanna, who sampled the song for Dont Stop the Music) had illegally sampled Soul Makossa by Manu DiBango, released in 1972 that was popular in the underground New York disco scene.
