During a business trip to Aveiro, Portugal, I just had to film this, one of the last state-owned metre gauge railways in the country. This section was built as late as 1911 and runs from the modern main line station at Aveiro (with it's impressive original building, adjacent), to the tiny hamlet of Sernada do Vouga. It runs through wonderful rural scenery, has numerous little stations in sleepy villages and has many steep gradients and tight curves. This film does not do the line justice; it is a real gem and as such should surely be protected. It could easily become a world-class tourist line as well continuing to provide a local passenger service.
'Officially' it is not under threat of closure, although local people are not holding their breaths, as CP have closed many such lines in the past. If the government or a local action group got their act together this could be a major attraction to the area, bringing in much-needed wealth and prosperity.
Thanks are due to the knowledgeable and English speaking guide at the Macinhata do Vouga museum, adjoining the line, for her willingness to give me such a fascinating tour of the exhibits.
Filmed between 24th and 26th June 2014.
