The Freezeout area in Idaho near the Montana border is legendary for the remoteness, beauty, ruggedness, and bountiful game. It is also the home of multiple legends of survival, man vs. nature, and stories of giant elk and bear told around the campfires of Idaho hunters for decades.
I had been in the area to Northwest of there; I camped there along Marble Creek with my grandparents as a child. My grandfather's ashes are spread around his favorite lunch spot while elk hunting about 15 miles away. But I had never actually travelled the legendary Freezeout Rd up and over the pass.
While mapping out a course on onX, I spotted a marker for "Haunted Cabin". Never heard of it and no idea what it was about, so Kim and I decided that would be our secondary goal for the trip. The first was to witness the beauty and ruggedness of Freezeout.
We did both, and after a total of 185 miles in the Jeep, with most of that at 10mph or less on rocky roads, we were exhausted, but definitely will be back to explore more areas in the region.
