Such a famous song with such a famous basspart! The ‘secret’ of playing the maingroove (for instance bar 3-4) is that you play the eight note on the second count/beat not too soon! When you play it on a bit of software and compare it with the timing of Bill Wyman than you’ll notice that the eight (syncopated) note of the second count is played just a little more laidback! The length of the first note (E-note) of the maingroove is also important: don’t play it too short and don’t play it too long.
I’ve chosen to play the maingroove on the fourth position (starting with the pinky of the left hand on the E note on the A-string). I think this is the most comfortable position to play the maingroove. You could also play the maingroove in the 7th position (starting with the first finger of your left hand on the E-note of the A-string), but I find that just a little bit less comfortable. Also the B-C# slide on the A-string is easier to go to when you play in the 4th position, then when you play the maingroove in the 7th position. But it’s up to you where to play the maingroove: do what feels most comfortable for you!
The maingroove is played in the intro and Verses, and in the Choruses Bill mainly plays root and fifth notes. He plays a nice riff on the B chord (bar 18) and a slide after the break (bar 38 and repeated). He plays the B and C# with a slide and only hitting the string once.
But the most important thing is to play the eight note of the second count just a little bit more laidback! And I think that this is what the Stones are about: most of the songs/basslines are not very complex but it’s the feel/groove that makes it sound like the Stones.
