Battotai (Drawn Sword Regiment), also known as the Japanese Army Branch March, is a Japanese March composed by Charles Leroux in 1912. It was used as the anthem of the the Imperial Japanese Army, and is used as a March for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. The name derives from the Battotai regiment, which defeated the Satsuma Rebellion at the Battle of Tabaruzaka by engaging in unexpected hand-to-hand combat.
This song is about "Seinan War", the last and largest rebellion by samurai in Japan, which took place in 1877.
The rebel samurais fought with guns at a distance and with Japanese swords when they approached, making it difficult for the government forces.
This was because, although the government army was large in number and had the latest guns, it was composed mostly of conscripted commoners, except for officers and enlisted men.
To counter this, ”Battotai” were organized by selecting former samurai from among the police officers.
In other words, while the song inspires the allies, it also sings of the sadness of the samurai ending the age of the samurai with their own hands.
