Three Latin American Impressions (1982/2008) was Miroslav Loncar's (b. 1964) first attempt at composing a substantial piece for guitar. The piece was created in Graz (Austria) for Mario Nardelli Jr. who performed it on his summer tour of Yugoslavia. After that, the piece was shelved for almost 20 years, until Slovenian guitarist Zarko Ignjatovic remembred the composition and asked Loncar for its manuscript. The piece was then revised with the expanded harmonic language, improvement in voice leading, and changes in overall structure of the piece.
The composition consists of three movements which stylistically pay tribute to three great Latin American composers: Antonio Lauro, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Leo Brouwer.
Alla Venezolana is a quick "waltz" in three different sections. Long melodic lines are reinforced with very energetic rhythms full of accents, syncopations, and frequent uses of a hemiola.
Alla Brazileira is a slow song in two sections. Its rhythmic simplicity is complimented with a very rich tonal language full of extended chords and chromatic alterations.
Alla Cubana is the most complex movement out of the three. Opening Largo leads into a quick rhythmic groove which constantly reappears as new sections are introduced.
Recorded in the University of Alaska Anchorage Recital Hall - February 2021.
Guitar: Glenn Canin 2019.
Strings: D'Addario.
