On 29 August 2025, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen travelled to Latvia where she held a press conference with Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa.
Her trip to Latvia marked the beginning of the President's mission to the frontline member states of the EU, thus to those countries which are immediately affected by the Russian war on Ukraine. The mission focuses on vital security matters and defence.
"Latvia is becoming a true drone powerhouse. Your expertise will help shape Europe’s security. And boost our defence industry for the years to come." (...)
"19 Member States, including Latvia, have requested support via our SAFE Defence instrument. I’m pleased to announce that we have reached full subscription of SAFE. The whole €150 billion. This is a European success."
