A Walk-Through Berlin Central Station – Between Architectural Wonder and Railway Frustration
Berlin Central Station is undoubtedly an architectural masterpiece. Towering glass facades, multiple levels full of shops, cafés and platforms, and a constant coming and going of people. A walk through this impressive building feels like a small journey through its own world – modern, busy, and at times chaotic.
Upon entering from Europaplatz, the massive glass roof immediately catches the eye, arching high above the top level. Escalators hum, digital boards flicker, suitcases roll across the gleaming floors. Those who take their time will discover quieter spots among the fast-food chains and bookstores – for example, on the east side with a view of the Spree River. Especially at sunset, the view from the eastern wing across the river offers a rare moment of calm amid the hustle and bustle.
But all the modern charm cannot hide one of Germany’s biggest annoyances: the chronic and often unbearable delays of Deutsche Bahn. It's hard to find a platform without annoyed glances at the display boards, hard to find an hour without “Train cancelled” or “Approx. 20 minutes delay.” Passengers rush from platform to platform – often because connections have been missed or a different train is suddenly being recommended. Especially during peak times, the station can feel more like an improvised maze than a functioning transportation hub.
The railway company’s excuses are many: “technical fault on the train,” “signal failure,” “people on the tracks.” For waiting passengers, they sound like a daily mantra. And anyone hoping to sit and relax will quickly realize: seating is scarce, particularly in the waiting areas.
Despite all this, Berlin Central Station remains a fascinating place. It shows what mobility is supposed to look like – and at the same time, how far reality can be from that vision. A walk through the station is more than just a route from point A to point B: it’s a brief look at modern Germany caught between progress and frustration.
