October 1944. Versailles, France. Rain hammered against the windows of the Trianon Palace Hotel. Inside a small office on the second floor, General Dwight Eisenhower sat alone at his desk. The room was cold. The light was gray. Outside, autumn storms swept across France, turning roads to mud and making life miserable for soldiers at the front.
