Today I will replace the tailgate cables on my Dodge Pickup. The cables are there to hold the tailgate when its open and to have it not fall onto the rear bumper. Therefore it is quite important that the cables are in good condition, especially when the tailgate is used as a truck bed extension or when someone steps on the opened tailgate. A rupture of the cable can in this case be dangerous. After countless openings and closings the plastic sheathing of the cables may break and they start to rust. Here one cable is already broken. The other one doesn't really look good either. Therefore, I will now replace both. To take off the old cable the screw on the tailgate needs to be removed. This is a T45 Torx screw. You will find this socket in many wrench sets. I put the correct socket on and loosen the screw. I begin with the replacement of the already broken cable so that the other cable holds the tailgate during the repair. The screw is quickly removed. Now I unhook the cable from the vehicle. This is easily done by holding back this metal latch by hand or screwdriver. I have ordered two new cables online for about 20 bucks. So here we have the new cable. Before you put it on make sure you have the right one. In this case its R for right. I use the T45 Torx screw to tighten the new steel cable to the tailgate. When tightening make sure that the cable is movable on the screw and is not pinched behind the notch. Now the other end can easily be hooked to the chassis. Simply lift the tailgate up slightly and clip it in. Now I will carry out the procedure on the other side in the same manner. Since one side has already been repaired it can easily be done without the risk of the tailgate falling down. The left cable could have lasted a little longer but it's always better to change both cables at the same time. Make sure that you install the cable the way that the thickening points outwards. That's it, the repair has been completed and the tailgate will be held for sure now. Watch out because the first closings of the tailgate can be a bit unwieldy so don't just slam it. The cables should bend downwards and not upwards. If necessary help out manually with the first closing. Overall you see that this repair is pretty easy if you got the right tools.
