IN THE GARDEN
Dear watchers may you enjoy in the garden with Gwen as she forages for greens. As deep December days darken and cold sets in the garden is entering it's winter rest. She enjoys using items from the garden to decorate for Christmas. Gwen bakes Jan Hagels: a family favorite Christmas cookie. On the deepest day of the year she invites her daughter for a winter solstice tea party.

IN THE KITCHEN
Jan Hagels
1 cup of butter
1 cup of sugar
1 egg, separated
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 cups flour
3/4 cup sliced almonds
2 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
*Beat butter, sugar, egg yolk, almond extract, and flour until a rough dough forms.
*Turn dough onto a greased cookie sheet 11x 16 inches. Pat dough down evenly.
*Beat egg white until foamy; spread over dough; spread nuts on top. Combine sugar and cinnamon, sprinkle over nuts.
*Bake at 350' for 20 minutes. Let cool on rack for 10 minutes. Cut in 8 lengthwise strips; then 12 diagonal cuts to make diamond shapes. Cool in pan and then remove carefully.
