Memorial Day: Honoring Sacrifice and Preserving Memory
A National Moment of Reflection and Gratitude
Memorial Day, observed annually on the last Monday of May, stands as one of America’s most solemn and cherished holidays. It is a day of remembrance, a time when citizens pause to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to the nation. For the common American citizen, Memorial Day carries profound significance, intertwining personal reflection, collective gratitude, and an enduring sense of civic responsibility.
The Origin of Memorial Day
Memorial Day traces its roots back to the aftermath of the Civil War, a conflict that claimed over 600,000 lives. Originally known as Decoration Day, it was established as a day for Americans to decorate the graves of soldiers with flowers, flags, and wreaths. On May 30, 1868, the first official Decoration Day observance took place at Arlington National Cemetery, where the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers were adorned in tribute.
Over time, as the country faced new conflicts and wars, the day evolved to honor all American military personnel who died in service. In 1971, Memorial Day was officially declared a federal holiday, ensuring its annual observance as a moment of national unity in remembrance.
The Importance of Memorial Day
Memorial Day resonates deeply with the common American citizen, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices made to secure the freedoms enjoyed today. It transcends political divides, uniting people in gratitude for those who laid down their lives for the nation’s ideals. The day is an opportunity to reflect on the cost of liberty and the enduring legacy of service.
My Memorial Day Tribute 2025
While Memorial Day is not here yet – we still have 4 days to go before it gets here – I’ve decided to go ahead and publish my tribute for this year. Those that follow me know that in 2024 I posted 4 songs that I sang: America the Beautiful, Folded Flag, Wild Irish Rose and God Bless America Again. This year I am doing something a little different.
This year I written a poem about Memorial Day. I recite this poem (hence a Recitation) to the background music of Amazing Grace. This poem covers WWI, WWII, The Korean War, The Vietnam War and the most recent War on Terror (or Middle Eastern War). As an Army Veteran who made it through Vietnam unhurt (I served one and a half tours – about 20 moths – in Phu Loi between January 1970 and August 1971) Memorial Day has always had a special meaning to me. I hope to convey my feelings to you in this “Recitation.”
I do hope that you enjoy this and will give it a thumbs up. Also, if you have not already done so, please subscribe to my YouTube channel. It will cost nothing and will mean the world to me. In addition you will be notified each time I post something new without having to read about it on Facebook or other social media apps.
