What caused Gwangju, the capital of South Korea's Jeolla-do Province to go rogue and form a militia to fight back against government forces in May 1980? Every year on May 18, we remember the brave democracy activists who stood up against martial law and dictatorship to not let another tyrant steal their window of opportunity for freedom.

Yet, it turns out that General Chun Doo-hwan used the dictator's playbook quite well and it again fooled a nation not strong enough to repel authoritarianism. Korea would be plunged for another 8 years of military dictatorship in the 1980s, but not before a 10-day siege of Gwangju citizens would leave its mark upon history.
