Underpinning contractors at work.

Underpinning is the construction of stronger, deeper footings to support a house that has subsided.
In this video, the underpinning contractor has already constructed the new footings which are in the cutout sections of a concrete slab. They have placed hydraulic jacks on top of the underpin footings and under the foundation of the house and work together to pump up the jacks carefully to lift the house back to where it was.
The reason we use underpins to support a house is to strengthen the foundation and try to lift it back up to the floor levels when it was built.
After the underpinning work is complete the internal and external damage can be repaired and hopefully, the building becomes stable and does not need continuing repairs.
The jacking up process has to be done carefully and in a coordinated way so that the house is not damaged during the jacking process.
