Well, let me first tell you the most important aspect, the x factor, the most unlikely hero of the saviour of these two legendary British Brands, India, well not the country India but Indian Brands either controlling the entire company or partially having a stake in the Brand. Obviously this is not the first time this has occurred, One of the most famous example is Tata taking over Jaguar and Land Rover.



Now back to the topic, a theoretical comparison between the Worlds oldest Bike Brand, i.e the Royal Enfield, Yes just in case you all did not know, RE is older than Harley Davidson, and her worthy competitor, the phonex that has just been risen from the Ashes, the BSA.

Lets start with their ownership:-


BSA is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Classic Legends Private Limited (CLPL) which in turn is a subsidiary company of M&M.

Royal Enfield was initially Licensed to Indian Madras Motors, after the British Left India, It is now a subsidiary of Eicher Motors Limited.


Now the heart

The new Gold Star 650 gets a 652cc engine which is a liquid-cooled, DOHC, four-valve unit responsible for delivering 45hp of maximum power at 6,000rpm and 55Nm of peak torque at 4,000rpm. BSA has specifically mentioned that the engine is detuned to 45hp, she will be able to produce more power, and variants in the future would have an engine that would have unleashed the engines full potential.



The BSA Goldstar's 648cc Parallel-twin, 4-stroke, single overhead cam, air/oil-cooled, fuel-injected engine. This unit is responsible for delivering 47 bhp of maximum power at 7,150 rpm and 52 Nm of peak torque at 5250 rpm. Valve Per Cylinder4



The BSA Gold Star produces torque as low as 1,800rpm, delivering a healthy flow throughout the rev range and resulting in effortless cruising and bursts of acceleration when needed.


We have personally ridden the Royal Enfield 650 extensively, and can positively mention that torque produced by this engine is also way low in the rpm range.

Both these engines are focused on low and mid range torque, for the feel of a classic British bike, rather than the burst of power that is categorised by Japanese bikes.

The BSA Gold Star uses a 5 speed gear box, while the RE uses a 6 speed.

Both these bikes are built to reach the tone mark, i.e, top speed exceeding 160 kmph.

The motorcycle rides on 18-inch front wheel wrapped with 18/90 section Pirelli Phantom tyre and 17-inch rear wheel shod with 150/70 Pirelli Phantom Sports comp tyre


The BSA Gold Star uses tubular steel, a dual-cradle frame and a 41mm telescopic fork and twin shock absorbers for suspension.

The Royal Enfield 650 also uses a tubular steel frame, while its suspension kit includes 41 mm front fork, 110 mm travel and Twin coil-over shocks with 88 mm travel in the rear.

In terms of appearance and details the BSA definitely looks the part, she looks like a bike that has just come out of the manufacturing from the 1960’s.

Everything from the way the engine looks to the instrument panel. They have done a commendable job of fusing the 1960’s with the technology of 2021, and I mean only the basic technology to make the bike road legal, like ABS and FI.

The Enfield too looks old school, but not as close to the way BSA flaunts their vintage heritage.
