The 1967 Pontiac GTO “Twisted 67 GTO” is a masterful reimagining of the classic muscle car, blending its heritage with modern technology and European pro-touring influences. The concept was to envision what the ultimate GTO would be if John DeLorean had unlimited resources and access to today’s technology. Led by Steve Aguilar, the build involved top experts like Hot Rods & Custom Stuff (HRCS) for metal fabrication, Sean Smith Designs for exterior and interior design, and BB Stile for upholstery.
The exterior features refabricated, tucked, and shortened bumpers, billet aluminum bezels for headlights and taillights, and custom stainless steel rocker panels. All billet pieces were finished in warm bright nickel by Ogden Chrome. The paint is BMW Blue Ridge Mountain Metallic with deep red accents, harmonizing beautifully with the nickel trim. A personal touch is the Pontiac Chief badge replaced by a 3D scanned profile of Aguilar’s son.
At its heart is a 427ci Dart LS V8 with Callies Ultra Billet internals, RaceTec pistons, All Pro aluminum heads, and a Whipple 2.9L supercharger painted in matte Audi Matador Red. The engine bay is gloss black, showcasing the powerplant as a “diamond in a box.” Supporting systems include a C&R radiator with computer-controlled fans, oil heat exchanger, and power steering cooler. Exhaust flows through hand-fabricated stainless steel headers and Borla mufflers.
Power goes through a heavily modified GM 4L80E automatic transmission with billet 2800 stall converter, driving a Ford 9” rear axle via a carbon fiber driveshaft. The chassis is a Roadster Shop Fast Track IRS with Penske coilovers and Strange Engineering rear end, powder-coated and detailed with ARP hardware. Braking is handled by Baer Pro+ six-piston calipers and 14” rotors front and rear.
Wheels, designed by Sean Smith and machined by EVOD Industries, are three-piece billet aluminum with nickel-plated barrels and bronze spokes, measuring 19x9” front and 20x12” rear, wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Redline tires.
The interior, inspired by European luxury cars, was designed using CAD to create CNC-milled door panels, dashboard, and billet trim. Upholstery by BB Stile features Hydes Ferrari Napa Bordeaux leather with black walnut trim accents. Unique billet aluminum instrument pods, control knobs, HVAC vents, and a custom steering wheel complement electric six-way seats, LED ambient lighting, and modern conveniences like electric windows and removable racing belts.
Since its debut at SEMA 2023, the Twisted 67 GTO has earned numerous awards including the GoodGuys Gold Bar Award, TMI SEMA Best of Show Champion, and first place in multiple categories at the 2024 Grand National Roadster Show. It continues to be a standout example of bespoke muscle car craftsmanship.
Sean Smith Designs, a creative studio with over 20 years’ experience, led the design efforts, known for pushing automotive design boundaries and delivering award-winning custom builds for clients such as Saleen Automotive and Ringbrothers.
In essence, the Twisted 67 GTO is a perfect blend of classic muscle car aggression and refined, modern luxury and performance, setting a new standard for what the Pontiac GTO could have been.
