Composé au printemps et à l’été 1914, peu avant le départ volontaire de Ravel pour la guerre, le Trio pour piano, violon et violoncelle est une de ses œuvres majeures de musique de chambre. Dans cette partition, il mêle la rigueur formelle à une invention rythmique et sonore d’une grande richesse, tout en glissant quelques échos de ses racines basques.

Le premier mouvement (Modéré) s’ouvre sur quatre mesures à 8/8 au rythme irrégulier, rappelant peut-être un motif populaire : trois croches, trois croches, puis deux croches à la main droite, soutenues par quatre noires régulières à la basse. Cette pulsation est reprise par les cordes dans une mélodie méditative, plus agitée en son centre.

Le deuxième mouvement, Pantoum (Assez vif), occupe la place du Scherzo et s’inspire d’une forme poétique malaise, basée sur l’entrelacement de vers : Ravel traduit ce principe en musique par le croisement raffiné de thèmes superposés.

Le troisième mouvement, Passacaille (Très large), repose sur une basse obstinée exposée par le piano, reprise au violoncelle puis au violon, montant chaque fois d’une octave avant de redescendre, donnant au tout une gravité méditative.

Le Final (Animé), très virtuose, est un Rondo aux mesures irrégulières (5/4 et 7/4), riche en effets pseudo-orchestraux : trilles, doubles cordes, arpèges, dans une exubérance de couleurs et de gaieté.

Écrit à la veille de la Grande Guerre, ce Trio reste un sommet du répertoire par son raffinement et sa vitalité lumineuse.

Composed in the spring and summer of 1914, just before Ravel volunteered for military service, the Piano Trio in A minor is one of his greatest chamber works. In this score, he blends formal precision with striking rhythmic and timbral invention, weaving in subtle echoes of his Basque roots.

The first movement (Modéré) opens with four bars in an unusual 8/8 rhythm: three eighth notes, three eighth notes, then two, in the upper voice, supported by four steady quarter notes in the bass. This pulse, perhaps reminiscent of Basque folk music, is immediately taken up by the strings in a meditative melody that grows more agitated in the middle section.

The second movement, Pantoum (Assez vif), takes the place of a traditional Scherzo and is inspired by the Malay poetic form in which the second and fourth lines of one stanza become the first and third of the next. Ravel translates this into music through an ingenious interweaving of overlapping themes.

The third movement, Passacaille (Très large), is built on an obstinate bass line introduced by the piano, then passed to the cello and the violin, each time rising by an octave before descending again, lending the movement a grave, meditative character.

The brilliant Final (Animé) is a Rondo written in irregular meters (5/4 and 7/4), full of pseudo-orchestral effects: trills, double stops, and arpeggios unfold in a dazzling display of color and exuberance.

Written on the eve of the First World War, this Trio remains a landmark of the piano trio repertoire, admired for its refinement and radiant vitality.
