The hymn "The Banner of the Cross," also known as "There's a royal banner given for display," was written by Civil War veteran Daniel W. Whittle with music by James McGranahan. The hymn uses the imagery of a banner to symbolize the cross as a rallying point for Christians and a declaration of loyalty to God. Whittle, who served as an evangelist with Dwight L. Moody after the war, was inspired by the Old Testament name for God, Jehovah Nissi (The Lord is My Banner), and the cross's significance as the leading banner for salvation.

Exodus 17:8-13, where God is called "Jehovah Nissi," meaning "The Lord is My Banner". This refers to God's power to give victory and act as a rallying point for His people.
