From Wasserauen to the Äscher Mountain Restaurant // Challenging Hike in Appenzell [4K 60fps]

I finally got to see the famous Berggasthaus Äscher (the 170-year old guesthouse built into the cliff) in the Appenzell region of eastern Switzerland. I did the hike at the end of March (there was still snow) and would only recommend this for the summer if you're an experienced hiker and are not afraid of heights. I definitely will be back to try this hike again in the summer.

Please note: the mountain trail can be dangerous, as it has a lot of steep climbs and drops, as well as a narrow dirt trail with uneven terrain and rocks. While the trail begins through the forest to Alp Bommen with a very steep set of switchbacks, I actually found the ascent up to the Äscher restaurant quite demanding and dizzying. The descent down to Seealpsee was a little less strenuous, but it was along a narrow foot path on the side of the mountain with snow and some sections had cables for a hand rail (don't be like me and please only try this hike in the summer).

How I got there from Zürich HB: I took the SBB train to Gossau station and then transferred to Wasserauen station. The trailhead is near the station and I started my hike from there. There is also cable-car that takes you up to Ebenalp and then you can hike a short distance to the Äscher restaurant, but it is only opened during the summer months.

Once my hike ended at Seealpsee, I walked on the service road back to Wasserauen station (40 min) and then took train back to Zürich HB. Unfortunately, my GoPro had some technical problems and I could no longer continuing filming this part of my journey.
