Tattoo Talks: Horiyoshi 4

Lifestyle Asia’s ‘Tattoo Talks’ explores the connection and stories behind people and their tattoos. For our next episode, we speak to Horiyoshi 4 (@4daime_horiyoshi), born Kazuyoshi Nakano, a fourth-generation tattoo master from the legendary Horiyoshi lineage.

All of Horiyoshi IV’s tattoos are all done by his father, Horiyoshi III (@horiyoshi_3), and for this edition of Tattoo Talks, he proudly shows us the works on his upper body. Nakano tells us that the piece on his back is a depiction of the ancient tale, Yotsuya Kaidan, one of the most famous Japanese ghost stories of all time. It’s a tale of betrayal and revenge which has been adapted countless times since it was written as a kabuki play in 1825. Spanning the length of Nakano’s back is an illustration of the character Oiwa who returns as a ghost to haunt her aggressors.
