Long ago, King Daksha Prajapati, the father of Goddess Sati, organized a grand yajna (sacred fire ritual).
But he deliberately did not invite Lord Shiva, his son-in-law, to the ceremony.

When Goddess Sati heard this, she felt deeply hurt and decided to go to the yajna without Shiva.
At the ceremony, her father insulted Lord Shiva in front of everyone.
Unable to bear the disrespect towards her beloved husband, Goddess Sati immolated herself in the sacred fire through her divine power (yogic fire).

When Lord Shiva learned of Sati’s death, he was consumed with grief and anger.
He lifted Sati’s lifeless body on his shoulder and began to wander across the universe in sorrow.
Seeing this, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut Sati’s body into 52 parts, so that Shiva’s pain could be eased.

Wherever a part of her body fell, a Shakti Peeth (sacred shrine of the Goddess) was formed.
It is believed that the upper part of Sati’s chest (Kunj) fell at this very place —
and that’s why it is known as Kunjapuri, meaning “The Holy Peak of the Goddess.”
