Today, Dr. Abhishek Shukla interacted with Dr. Resham Srivastava, a Radiation Oncologist who completed her MD from SGPGI, Lucknow, and is currently associated with Medanta. She explained that radiation therapy is an important part of cancer treatment, which uses high-energy X-rays or other particles to destroy cancer cells. The goal is to target malignant cells while minimizing harm to normal surrounding tissues. Radiation therapy can be used as a primary treatment, or as an adjuvant therapy before surgery (to shrink tumors) or after surgery (to eliminate remaining cancer cells).
Dr. Srivastava elaborated on the advancements in radiation technology that have significantly improved precision and safety. Techniques such as 3D Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D-CRT), Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), RapidArc with Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), and Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) enable the delivery of high doses directly to the tumor with minimal exposure to healthy tissue. Specialized approaches like Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT) are used for treating small and precisely located tumors, particularly in the brain and spine. These innovations have made radiation therapy much safer and more effective for cancers such as breast, oral, uterine, and head and neck malignancies.
She also addressed common myths and misconceptions surrounding radiation therapy. Many patients fear that they may become radioactive after treatment or that they cannot be around children or pregnant women, which is entirely untrue. Radiation is delivered by external machines and does not make patients emit radiation once the session ends. She clarified that radiation therapy is a controlled, safe, and scientifically guided process, emphasizing that awareness and correct understanding can help patients approach treatment with confidence rather than fear.
