🌍✨ People of the Book: Episode 17 — Juan Garrido ✨🌍
Born in the Kingdom of Kongo, torn from his home, and carried to Lisbon as a youth, Juan Garrido’s footsteps crossed oceans into the heart of empire. From Portugal he was thrown into the Spanish conquest of Mexico, standing alongside Cortés in battles that silenced nations and spilled rivers of blood.
Yet Garrido was more than just a soldier in Spain’s wars. He became the first to plant wheat in the Americas, leaving behind both destruction and seeds of life. His journey mirrors the brokenness of our history: a Black man enslaved, baptized into a foreign faith, and forced to fight against people whose suffering mirrored his own.
Behind his name lies a heavy lesson — how empire uses survival against us, turning captives into conquerors, making the oppressed fight the oppressed. Still, through the distortion, his story survived. And in that survival, there is a testimony: that Allah does not forget, and that no empire erases truth forever.
💡 Takeaway Qur’an Verse:
“And rely upon Allah; and sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.” (Qur’an 33:3)
Walk with us as we uncover the legacies of those whose names were carried across seas not by choice, but by survival and remember that even in distortion, Allah’s justice endures.
